Agent Commission Splits
The Agent Commission Splits system determines how the agency's gross commission is distributed among your agents. Commission Tracker offers two distinct methods for managing these payouts, allowing for both high-level efficiency and policy-level precision.
Choose Your Split Method
Selecting the right method depends on whether your splits are standardized across a carrier or unique to a single client.
1. Carrier Table Level (Highly Efficient)
In this method, you define the splits once on the Carrier Table. Every policy assigned to that table automatically inherits those split rules. This is the recommended practice for 95% of your business.
2. Policy Level (The Exception Rule)
This method allows you to define a custom split table for one specific policy. This is useful for "one-off" negotiations or mid-term changes but requires more manual setup as it must be done policy-by-policy.
Advanced Split Configurations
For agencies with more complex hierarchies, Commission Tracker supports several advanced payout structures:
- Agent Levels - Automate payouts based on an agent's rank or production tier.
- Agent Uplines - Automatically calculate overrides for managers or recruiters.
- Multiple Primary Agents (Sharing) - Split the "Primary Agent" portion of a commission between two or more people.
- Manage Levels & Uplines - Detailed instructions on maintaining your agency's hierarchy.
When to Use Which Method
| Scenario | Recommended Method |
|---|---|
| Standard Payouts (e.g., all Blue Cross policies pay 50%) | Carrier Table Splits |
| Standard Overrides (e.g., Manager always gets 5%) | Agent Uplines |
| One-Off Deals (e.g., special 70% split for one VIP client) | Policy-Specific Splits |
| Mid-Term Split Changes | Policy-Specific Splits (using Start Dates) |
What Happens When a Payment is Received
- The system identifies the Carrier Table assigned to the policy.
- It checks if a Policy-Specific Split exists for that payment's billing date.
- If a Policy-Specific split exists, it uses that; otherwise, it defaults to the Carrier Table Split.
- The final calculation is performed, and the data is sent to the Agent Commissions Earned report.
Step-by-Step: Best Practices for Setup
- Start with the Carrier Table: Define your most common split scenarios here first.
- Assign Agents: Ensure your Primary Agents are correctly selected on the Policy info screen.
- Audit Monthly: Use the Agent Commission Splits Report to ensure all totals equal 100%.
Troubleshooting
Q: Can I mix methods? A: Yes. You can have a default split on the Carrier Table, but if you create a Policy-Specific table for a specific policy, the system will use the policy-level rules instead of the carrier-level rules for that specific case.
Q: Why isn't my Upline getting paid? A: Verify that the Upline is correctly linked in the Manage Agent Levels and Uplines screen and that the Carrier Table is set to use "Upline" logic.
