Policy Type
Policy Type is a mandatory field used to specify the product or coverage type for a policy. Most reports in Commission Tracker can be filtered by this field, allowing for detailed production analysis by product line.
π‘ Why Use This
Policy Type is required on every policy and is used when:
- Categorizing your book of business β Filter reports by product line (e.g., Dental vs. Life) to analyze revenue by coverage type.
- Distinguishing duplicate policy numbers β When two policies share the same number, Policy Type is one of the key fields used to tell them apart during imports.
- Standardizing reporting β Consistent type names produce clean, comparable data across all carrier and client reports.
πΊοΈ How to Access
The Policy Type field is on the Policy screen within the Policy Information section. Policy Types are managed under Tools β Edit Policy Types.
Managing Policy Types

- Location β Tools β Edit Policy Types.
- Requirement β Required for every new policy.
- Capacity β Supports up to 30 characters; create as many types as needed.

Examples
- General β Life, Health, Dental, Vision.
- Specific β Small Group Health, Large Group Health, 10-Year Term.
Best Practices
- Consistency β Use clear, standardized names to ensure clean reporting. Avoid variations like "Health" and "Med" for the same product.
- Granularity β Use specific types if you want to track the performance of different sized groups or niche products separately.
π§ Troubleshooting
The Policy Type I need is not in the dropdown when creating a policy. Go to Tools β Edit Policy Types and add the new type. Once saved, return to the policy screen β the new type will appear in the dropdown immediately.
I need to rename an existing Policy Type. You can rename a type at any time in Tools β Edit Policy Types. The system automatically updates every policy currently assigned to that type.
